Infection Control Course

Designed for:

This course was originally written to be used in third world countries to improve hospital healthcare outcomes.  The first 11 lessons cover the fundamentals of infection control principles for ward based infection control nurses, with a further 13 lessons for those wanting to work as a hospital infection control coordinator.  Each lesson takes between 2-3 hours depending on translation necessities.  The course is written in English and has also been translated in Khmer.

 

Format:             

Didactic, group work and practical workshops 

 

Time Frame: 

11 x 2-3 hours (Infection Control Nurse)

13 x 2-3 hours (Infection Control Coordinator)

 

Objective:

The initial eleven lessons cover an introduction to infection control principles, the chain of infection,  hand hygiene, aseptic technique, standard and additional precautions, cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, sterilisation, waste and laundry management, biohazards, wound healing and antiseptics.   

The second part of the course builds on this knowledge covering nosocomial infections, surveillance, endemic and pandemic management, immune and defense systems,  common bacteria, viral and fungal microorganisms, resistant strains and antibiotic use, invasive devices, infection control policy and procedures, how to develop, write and implement IC policies, leadership, communication, negotiating and influencing behaviour and evaluating health care products.
